Transabdominal ultrasound should be performed in all patients with acute pancreatitis and it may be beneficial in the diagnosis of gallstones which is the most common underlying cause of pancreatitis.

Ultrasound may be beneficial in the diagnosis of gallstones which is the most common underlying cause of pancreatitis (~40%).^[1]
