Historical Perspective

  • Biliary fistula was first mentioned by Thomas Bartholin, a Danish physician, in 1654, and described by Thilesus for the first time in 1670.
  • In 1890, Ludwig Georg Courvoisier, a Swiss surgeon was the first to report 169 cases of external biliary fistulas.[1]
