Overview
Bronchogenic cyst is a rare benign congenital malformation in which there is a fluid filled mass in the lungs.
What are the symptoms of bronchogenic cyst
Bronchogenic cyst is often asymptomatic and discovered accidentally while investigating other health conditions. When symptomatic, the most common symptoms of bronchogenic cyst are:
- Difficulty breathing
- Cough
- Chest pain
- Purulent sputum
- Rhinitis
- neck pain
- Diffculty swallowing
- Fever
Diagnosis
Treatment
Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for bronchogenic cyst.
- Thoracotomy is an incision made on the chest, to gain access to the Lung
- Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery a minimally invasive alternative to thoracotomy. A small incision is made on the chest, then a thoracoscope (a fibre-optic camera) and surgical instruments are inserted to view the thoracic cavity on a video monitor and guide the surgery.
Complete surgical resection is curative. Prognosis is generally good but possible complications include
