Bronchogenic cyst is a rare benign congenital malformation in which there is a fluid filled mass in the lungs.

Bronchogenic cyst is often asymptomatic and discovered accidentally while investigating other health conditions. When symptomatic, the most common symptoms of bronchogenic cyst are:

• Difficulty breathing
• Cough
• Chest pain
• Purulent sputum
• Rhinitis
• neck pain
• Diffculty swallowing
• Fever

• X-ray
• CT scan
• MRI

Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for bronchogenic cyst.

• Thoracotomy is an incision made on the chest, to gain access to the Lung
• Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery a minimally invasive alternative to thoracotomy. A small incision is made on the chest, then a thoracoscope (a fibre-optic camera) and surgical instruments are inserted to view the thoracic cavity on a video monitor and guide the surgery.

Complete surgical resection is curative. Prognosis is generally good but possible complications include

• Inflammatory stenosis
• adhesions
• persistent air leak
