Editor-In-Chief: C. Michael Gibson, M.S., M.D. [1]
Overview
A cholesteryl ester is, as its name would imply, an ester of cholesterol. The ester bond is formed between carboxylate group of a fatty acid and the hydroxyl group of cholesterol. The accumulation of cholesterol esters in the arterial intima is a characteristic feature of atherosclerosis.
