Crazy paving sign
Editor-In-Chief: C. Michael Gibson, M.S., M.D. [1]
Overview
Crazy-paving sign is classically associated with pulmonary alveolar proteinosis. The linear network or reticular pattern in the crazy-paving sign is believed to result from a thickening of the interlobular septa, while areas of ground-glass opacity result from partial alveolar filling processes.
Causes
- Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis
- Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia
- Mucinous bronchoalveolar carcinoma
- Sarcoidosis
- Lipoid pneumonia
- Adult respiratory distress syndrome
- Pulmonary hemorrhage
Diagnosis
On imaging, the sign appears as a linear network or reticular pattern with areas of ground-glass opacification.
