Abnormal uterine bleeding secondary prevention

Secondary prevention occurs once the disease has developed and aims to prevent progression and development of further complications. Complications due to abnormal uterine bleeding include infertility, anemia, and malignancy.

DUB-based complications can be treated by:

• Infertility: treat the underlying cause; since medical treatment is often hormonal and would prevent fertility, surgical treatment is opted for. This includes removal of any structural masses preventing fertility^[1]
• Anemia: supplemental iron treatment^[2]
• Malignancy: prevent excess estrogen exposure with the use of hormonal contraceptive medications; avoid use of hormonal replacement therapy^[3]
