Encephalopathy prevention

All encephalopathies are not preventable. A few like hepatic, metabolic, hypoxic are preventable. Early determination of these conditions is very important in terms of morbidity/mortality and cost of the treatment.

• Hepatic encephalopathy
  • Prevention of liver failure
  • Vaccination for hepatitis
  • Administration of lactulose in cirrhotic patients
  • Avoiding transjugular shunt

• Wernicke encephalopathy
  • Abstinence from alcohol
  • Thiamine administration

• Hypoxic encephalopathy
  • Reducing duration of labor
  • Early cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
