Overview

Bone marrow biopsy is an important test and needed to make a diagnosis of essential thrombocytosis.^[1] On bone marrow biopsy, essential thrombocytosis is characterized by bone marrow hypercellularity with clusters of megakaryocytes that stain positive for iron, increased reticulin, and no collagen fibrosis.

Bone marrow biopsy is an important test and needed to make a diagnosis of essential thrombocytosis.^[1]
On bone marrow biopsy, essential thrombocytosis is characterized by:
- Increased cellularity
- Hyperplasia and clustering of megakaryocytes
- Bone marrow stains positive for iron
- Bone marrow reticulin may be increased with no collagen fibrosis
