Overview

Ultrasound may be helpful in the diagnosis of fibroadenoma. Findings on ultrasound suggestive of fibrodenoma include a well-circumscribed, round to ovoid, macrolobulated mass that is generally uniformly hypoechogenic.

Ultrasound

  • Ultrasound may be helpful in the diagnosis of fibroadenoma.
  • It is the most commonly used breast imaging method in adolescents. It can determine if a mass is solid or cystic. Findings on ultrasound suggestive of fibrodenoma include:[1][2][3]
  • Well-circumscribed, round to ovoid mass
  • Macrolobulated mass with a smooth contour
  • Uniformly distributed weak internal echoes
  • Intermediate acoustic attenuation
  • Surrounded by a thin echogenic rim (pseudocapsule)
  • Calcification may be detectable in 10% of the cases
  • Serial ultrasounds may be needed look for changes in the size of the fibroadenoma overtime.[2]
  • Ultrasound may lack the ability to distinguish benign masses from cancer.[4]
