Functional mitral regurgitation

Editor-In-Chief: C. Michael Gibson, M.S., M.D. [1]

Overview

Functional mitral regurgitation refers to mitral regurgitation that occurs when the left ventricle dilates causing dilation of the mitral annulus and incompetence or leaking of the mitral valve. The mitral valve is itself normal.

Treatment

Diuretics and afterload reduction are often effective in reducing left ventricular volumes and thereby reducing funcitonal mitral regurgitation.
