Overview
The natural history of infectious colitis depends on the pathogen. Whenever infectious colitis is prolonged for longer than 30 days, other causes of colitis should be ruled out.

The natural history of infectious colitis depends on the pathogen causing infectious colitis as follows:[1]
- Shigella spp.
- Campylobacter jejuni
- Clostridium difficile
- Escherichia coli
- Nontyphoidal Salmonella
- Entameoba histolytica
- Chlamydia trachomatis
- Cytomegalovirus
- Yersinia enterocolitica
