Inguinal hernia ultrasound

Overview
Ultrasound may be helpful in the diagnosis of inguinal hernia. Findings on an ultrasound diagnostic of inguinal hernia include herniated bowel contents, herniated fat and the normal intra-abdominal contents move inferior with the Valsalva maneuver.

- Ultrasound may be helpful in the diagnosis of inguinal hernia. Findings on an ultrasound diagnostic of inguinal hernia include:[1][2]
- Herniated bowel contents may show peristalsis
- Herniated fat appears hyperechoic
- Reducibility and bowel viability is identified by peristalsis or mucosal blood flow
- The normal intra-abdominal contents move inferior with the Valsalva maneuver
