MALT lymphoma history and symptoms

When evaluating a patient for MALT lymphoma, you should take a detailed history of the presenting symptom (onset, duration, and progression), other associated symptoms, and a thorough family and past medical history review. Other specific areas of focus when obtaining the history include the review of common associated conditions such as H. pyroli associated gastritis and autoimmune disorders, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Sjogren’s syndrome, and Celiac disease. Symptoms of MALT lymphoma depend on the location of the tumor: gastric and non gastric. Symptoms of MALT lymphoma include epigastric pain, fatigue, heartburn, fever, cough with blood in sputum, shortness of breath, and/or lump in the superior lateral quadrant of the orbit, breast, neck, or salivary gland.

• Symptoms of gastric MALT lymphoma include:

• Epigastric pain
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Early satiety
• Fatigue
• Weight loss
• Indigestion
• Heartburn

• Symptoms of MALT lymphoma of the lung include:^[2]

• Most of the cases are asymptomatic
• Cough with blood in sputum
• Shortness of breath
• Fever
• Weight loss

• Symptoms of MALT lymphoma of the orbit include:

• Lump in the superior lateral quadrant of the orbit
• Drooping of the eyelids
• Double vision
• Abnormal ocular movements
• “Salmon red patch” of swollen conjunctiva (25%)

• Symptoms of MALT lymphoma of the skin include:^[2]

• Single to multiple red–brown lumps or flat, discoloured areas on the back or extremities, can be itchy

• Symptoms of MALT lymphoma of the bowel include:^[2]

• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea

• Symptoms of MALT lymphoma of the urinary tract include:^[2]

• Blood in urine
• Difficulty passing urine
• Lower abdominal pain
• Back pain

• Symptoms of MALT lymphoma of the breast include:^[2]

• Single to multiple, painful, lump(s) in the outer parts of the breast

• Symptoms of MALT lymphoma of the thyroid gland include:^[2]

• Lump in the neck
• Difficulty swallowing
• Hoarseness in voice

• Symptoms of MALT lymphoma of the salivary gland include:^[2]

• Lump in the salivary gland (i.e., in front of the ear or at the angle of the jaw)
