• Most common breast symptom leading to office visit
• More common in premenopausal women
• Rarely a presenting symptom of cancer

  • Study of women with known breast cancer: 7% presented with mastalgia alone.
  • Women referred for mammogram because of mastalgia:

    • 0.4% had breast cancer (same as controls)
    • 87% had normal mammogram
    • 9% had benign abnormalities
