Editor-In-Chief: C. Michael Gibson, M.S., M.D. [1]; Associate Editor(s)-in-Chief: Mahshid Mir, M.D. [2]

Overview

Surgical treatments include Curettage, in which molluscum contagiosum lesions are surgically removed. Additionally, laser therapy can be effective in the treatment of molluscum contagiosum lesions.

Surgery

Curettage
  • Physical removal of the molluscum contagiosum lesion with a curette[1]
  • Immediate effect of treatment
  • High number of lesions and concomitant atopic dermatitis are considered as risk factors associated with treatment failure
  • Can lead to small, depressed scars as a side effect

Laser

Pulsed dye laser therapy for molluscum contagiosum may be effective as the treatment for multiple lesions in patient [2][3]
