Short bowel syndrome primary prevention

Overview

There are no established measures for the primary prevention of short bowel syndrome. However, treating underlying causes including Crohn’s disease and malignancies might prevent short bowel syndrome.

Primary Prevention

There are no established measures for the primary prevention of short bowel syndrome.^[1]
Treating Crohn’s disease promptly might prevent further complications. However, despite effective treatment, many patients with Crohn’s disease will undergo bowel resection.^[2]
Since the length of remaining bowel is the most powerful predictor of short bowel syndrome, a surgeon may consider bowel resection length as short as possible.^[3]^[4]
