A simple CBC is cheap, fast, accurate and the diagnostic study of choice for thrombocytopenia. Further investigations to look for the cause of thrombocytopenia is based on patient’s history, symptoms and the judgment of the clinician in any specific condition.

• CBC
• Peripheral blood smear
• Viral studies (hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV)
• Anti-platelet antibody testing
• Bone marrow aspirate and biopsy
