Tremor MRI

Overview
An MRI is not helpful in diagnosing the most common causes of tremor, but it can help diagnose some less common causes of tremor including cerebellar lesion, stroke, multiple sclerosis , and Wilsons disease. It may help determine if the tremor is the result of a structural defect or degeneration of the brain. Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a noninvasive focused ultrasound ablative thalamotomy procedure used to treat essential tremor.
MRI
- MRI is not helpful in diagnosing the most common causes of tremor, but it can help diagnose some less common causes of tremor including cerebellar lesion, stroke, multiple sclerosis , and Wilsons disease.
- It may help determine if the tremor is the result of a structural defect or degeneration of the brain.
- MRI may show a narrowing of a high signal region between the red nucleus and the substantia nigra in patients with Parkinson’s disease. [1]
- Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a noninvasive focused ultrasound ablative thalamotomy procedure used to treat essential tremor. This procedure destroys the area of the brain causing the tremor in patients not responding to medical treatment. Four year follow-up of this procedure has shown sustained results. This procedure has also shown some successful results in a few patients with Parkinson’s disease-related tremor. [2][3]
