Warthin's tumor MRI

Editor-In-Chief: C. Michael Gibson, M.S., M.D. [1]

Overview

On MRI, Warthin’s tumor is characterized by well-defined bilateral lesions which are heterogeneous and variable in signal intensity.

Key MRI Findings in Warthin’s tumor

  • MRI is the most appropriate imaging study for these tumors[1]
  • MRI can easily differentiate between benign and malignant parotid lesions by evaluating
    • lesion margins,
    • SI of cystic content,
    • extraglandular infiltrative growth pattern,
    • cervical lymph nodes,
  • Ill defined images will suggest malignancy
  • Hypointense capsule and well defined margins are characteristic of benign lesions
  • T1: low to intermediate signal with cyst containing cholesterol components
  • T2: heterogenous and variable signal intensity
  • T1 C+ (Gd): usually no contrast enhancement[2]
