Avoidance of certain hair care practices along with proper hygiene and diet are useful in preventing occurrence of alopecia.

Primary Prevention

Careful selection and use of bathing and hair care products, good hygiene, good diet, and maintenance of overall health are helpful in reducing the risk of alopecia. Also certain hairstyles such as tight braids, roughly brushing and massaging the hair, and heat style should also be avoided.
