Past medical history should include evaluation and assessment for autoimmune disorders, chronic infection, trauma, major surgery, malignancy, HIV infection, rheumatologic disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, Castleman disease, heart failure, older adults, renal insufficiency and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Symptoms
Symptoms
Anemia of chronic disease is often mild. Patients may not notice symptoms of anemia. If they occur, symptoms may include:
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Shortness of breath
- Decreased exercise tolerance
