Other diagnostic studies for autism include electroencephalography, metabolic testing, polysomnography and genetic testing to rule out other conditions.

- Tests to evaluate metabolic disorders:[1]
- Various metabolic disorders involving nucleotides, amino acids, vitamins, and mitochondria may be found in association with autism spectrum disorder.
- However, screening and testing to investigate metabolic abnormalities, are not routinely recommended for the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Unless the patient present with symptoms including seizures, sluggishness, recurrent vomiting, dysmorphic feautures and gross motor and mental retardation.
- Electroencephalography:[2]
- Electroencephalography is not routinely indicated to diagnose autism spectrum disorder.
- May be indicated in certain conditions, to evaluate autism spectrum disorder presenting with seizures, landau-kleffner syndrome (aphasia with seizures).
- Polysomnography:[3]
- Abnormalities in sleep pattern such as frequent wakeups, early morning arousals, and altered sleep are commonly found in children with autism spectrum disorder.
- Polysomnography may be helpful in evaluation of these conditions.
- Genetic testing:
- As per recommendations of the American academy of neurology and the child neurology society, genetic testing is indicated in cases of autism and fragile X syndrome.
