Primary Prevention

Effective measures for the primary prevention of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease include:^[1]

Smoking cessation or decreasing the number of cigarettes
Avoiding air pollutants
Decreased environmental exposure to irritants
Use of physical barriers such as masks and gown
