Overview
Overview
As with most congenital heart defects, there is no known cause. Approximately 10% of patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome also have other birth defects.
Causes
Causes
While many authorities believe the cause of hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is unknown,[1] [2][3] recent research indicates that HLHS may be due to genetic factors. [4][5] There is evidence associates hypoplastic left heart syndrome with gap junction protein, alpha 1.[6]
