Bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage is useful to obtain samples for finding lipid-laden macrophages.

- Bronchoalveolar lavage is used in the diagnosis of lipoid pneumonia only mostly.[1]
- Broncho alveolar lavage may reveal turbid or whitish fluid with fat droplets at the surface.
- Frozen samples should be examined by various staining techniques to discriminate types of oils.
- Some false negative cases have been reported.[2]
