Meckel's diverticulum x ray

Overview

A gastrointestinal or GI series is an X-ray exam of the small intestine subsequent to barium ingestion. On upper GI series, the Meckel’s diverticulum appears as a smooth, white, globular mass located 50 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve and arising from the antimesenteric border of the ileum.

X Ray

In patients with GI bleeding, plain abdominal X Ray is non specific.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4]
Upper GI series with small-bowel follow-through may help in the detection of a diverticulum.
Appearance of Meckel’s diverticulum on upper GI series:
- Smooth
- Globular
- White
- Location:
  - Arising from the antimesenteric border of the ileum
  - 50 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve
