Mumps other diagnostic studies

Mumps is a clinical diagnosis. Further testing may be required in patients with secondary complications.

Profound (91 dB or more) but rare sensorineural hearing loss which may be either unilateral or bilateral has been associated with mumps infection. Such patients, may be subjected to additional auditory testing.

• Approximately 40% patients infected with mumps may be complicated with secondary meningitis.

• Lumbar puncture is valuable in such patients. However, a CT scan without contrast is indicated prior to LP to rule out raised intracranial pressure.

• Common LP findings due to viral meningitis include:

• Clear CSF fluid
• Normal to mildly elevated white cells in the CSF
• Markedly elevated lymphocytes and proteins in the CSF
• Normal glucose content in the CSF
