Necrotizing fasciitis CT

On CT scan, necrotizing fasciitis is characterized by subcutaneous emphysema, asymmetrical fascial thickening associated with fat stranding, edema and abscesses.

Findings on CT scan suggestive of necrotizing fasciitis include:^[1][2]

• Subcutaneous emphysema
• Asymmetrical fascial thickening associated with fat stranding
• Edema extending into the intermuscular septa and the muscle
• Thickening of one or both of the superficial and deep fascial layers
• Abscesses
• Diffuse enhancement (post contrast CT)
