Overview
Overview
There are no known and well established causes of POEMS syndrome. Marked activation of the pro-inflammatory cytokines and weak or decreased TGF beta 1 action can play a role in the disease pathogenesis.
Causes
Causes
- There are no known and well established causes of POEMS syndrome.
- Some studies suggest that marked activation of the pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1 beta, IL-6, and TNF-alpha) play a role in the disease pathogenesis.[1]
- Weak or even decreased (TGF beta 1) antagonistic reaction insufficient to counteract the noxious effects of cytokines can also result in this syndrome.[1]
