There are no known and well established causes of POEMS syndrome.
Some studies suggest that marked activation of the pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1 beta, IL-6, and TNF-alpha) play a role in the disease pathogenesis.^[1]
Weak or even decreased (TGF beta 1) antagonistic reaction insufficient to counteract the noxious effects of cytokines can also result in this syndrome.^[1]
