Parathyroid cancer history and symptoms

The hallmark of parathyroid cancer is a neck mass. A positive history of multiple endocrine neoplasian type I, hyperparathyroidism, and previous radiation therapy to the head or neck is suggestive of parathyroid cancer. The most common symptoms of parathyroid cancer include weight loss, muscle weakness, fractures, constipation, fatigue, and bone pain.

• When evaluating a patient for parathyroid cancer, you should take a detailed history of the presenting symptom (duration, onset, progression), a thorough family history review, and a history of possible associated syndromes and risk factors such as:

• Multiple endocrine neoplasia type I
• Hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT) syndrome
• Previous radiation therapy to the head or neck^[1]

• Bone pain
• Pathological fractures
• Palpable neck mass
• Fatigue
• Muscle weakness
• Weight loss
• Dehydration
• Nausea
• Constipation
• Frequent thrist
• Kidney stone
• Poor appetite
• Frequent urination
• Vomiting
