Overview

Overview

Pertussis can also be diagnosed using direct flourescent antibody (DFA) and pulsed-field gel eletrophoresis tests.

Other Diagnostic Studies

Other Diagnostic Studies

  • Direct fluorescent antibody (DFA)
    • DFA is inexpensive and may provide rapid results.[1]
    • It’s drawbacks, however, include poor sensitivity and specificity.[1]
  • Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE)
    • PFGE is a DNA fingerprinting technique that has the following advantages:[2]
      • Highly discriminating in its results[3]
      • Easily applicable to Bordetella pertussis[3]
      • Stable and easily reproduced[3]
    • PFGE’s drawbacks include duration of time to perform as well as required a specifically trained and skilled technician.[3]
