Overview

Pertussis can also be diagnosed using direct flourescent antibody (DFA) and pulsed-field gel eletrophoresis tests.

Other Diagnostic Studies

Direct fluorescent antibody (DFA)
- DFA is inexpensive and may provide rapid results.^[1]
- It’s drawbacks, however, include poor sensitivity and specificity.^[1]
Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE)
- PFGE is a DNA fingerprinting technique that has the following advantages:^[2]
  - Highly discriminating in its results^[3]
  - Easily applicable to Bordetella pertussis^[3]
  - Stable and easily reproduced^[3]
- PFGE’s drawbacks include duration of time to perform as well as required a specifically trained and skilled technician.^[3]
