An x-ray may be helpful in the diagnosis of pyelonephritis, its risk factors, and complications. Some patients with pyelonephritis have kidney stone which might be visible on x rays of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder (KUB).

  • Emphysematous pyelonephritis: X ray may depict the presence of gas bubbles.
  • Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis: X ray may show presence of a calculus which is most commonly involved in the pathophysiology of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis.
