Primary prevention strategies include early screening, changing lifestyle, decreasing exposure to occupational risk factors, and controlling of hypertension.

Although the etiology for the development of kidney cancer are not well understood, epidemic data shows the effective measures for the primary prevention of renal cell carcinoma include followings:[1][2]
- Early screening and treating genetic and hereditary diseases
- Changing lifestyle
- Smoking cessation
- Controlling weight
- Decreasing exposure to occupational risk factors including:
- Asbestos
- Cadmium
- Benzene
- Herbicides
- Organic solvents particularly trichloroethylene
- Early detection and control of hypertension
