In severe cases, bone marrow transplant is the only option with limited information about the success rate.
Indications
Indications
- Surgery is not the first-line treatment option for patients with sideroblastic anemia.[1]
- The indications for surgery are:
- Young patients with congenital sideroblastic anemia, not responsive to pyridoxine
- Transfusion dependent patients
- Liver cirrhosis
- Iron overload refractory to iron chelation therapy
- Iron overload refractory to phlebotomy
Contraindications
Contraindications
- Patients with organ damage from secondary hemochromatosis
- Poor surgical candidacy
