Basic research

Basic research, fundamental research (sometimes pure research), is research carried out ‘for research’s sake’, in a greater scientific and human endeavour to better understand phenomenon in the world we live in. It is research that is not ‘tainted’ by some commercial or utilitarian purpose or imperative, and is often opposed to ‘applied’ research
