Incidence of many cardiovascular diseases has reduced after the induction of anti-retroviral therapy in the treatment of HIV infection.

Incidence
Before the introduction of HAART the incidence of various cardiovascular diseases was as follows:
- Dilated cardiomyopathy – 1590 per 100,000
- Systemic hypertension – 20,000 – 25,000 per 100,000. After the introduction of HAART the incidence increased significantly to 74,000 per 100,000 [1].
- Pericarditis – 11,000 per 100,000
- HIV-associated pulmonary artery hypertension – 500 per 100,000
- Kaposi’s sarcoma of the heart – 12,000 – 28,000 per 100,000
