WikiDoc scholar program

Introduction

You are invited to apply to the WikiDoc Scholar Program. WikiDoc is a collaborative effort by healthcare professionals worldwide to construct a reliable open medical encyclopedia. All qualified applicants will be offered to join as WikiDoc scholars in a remote capacity. There is not currently any research/observership positions available.

Please note the following requirements/terms of our program:

This experience is as an editor of the encyclopedia with no clinical component.
No salary or funding is available to cover expenses
This is a volunteer only position, you are not an employee of WikiDoc in any capacity
Letters of recommendation and WikiDoc Scholar Certificates will be available for those who contribute and meet the requirements as outlined on the Letter of Recommendation Page

If you would like to formally apply for this program, please download the application below and submit it. In order for your application to be complete, you are required to submit a writing sample and verification of English Proficiency. A writing sample refers to any piece of writing you have personally written. It does not need to be something published in an academic journal. An acceptable writing sample includes: a personal statement, an assignment written for school, or a blog post. The purpose of the writing sample is to help the review committee understand what role you would be best suited for within the textbook development. Verification of English Proficiency refers to test scores from any recognized test (TOEFL, IELTS, Step 2 CS, etc.) or documentation from an academic institution or English language school. Lastly, please send over your CV.

Wikidoc Scholar Application

Once we have received your materials, our team will follow up with you. We must have all of your materials submitted in one packet in order for your application to be considered complete and ready for review. If we receive an incomplete packet, we will not review your materials.

Single Page vs. Microchapter

Microchapter

Any topic that comprises of significantly abundant information, should be composed into a microchapter consisting of different divisions as seen here.
To learn about composing/editing a microchapter, click here.

Single Page

Any topic that does not qualify to be a microchapter, should be composed into a single page consisting of a page not more than 3 mouse-scrolls long.

Project Checklist

Microchapters or single pages will only be considered complete when all the requirements in the standard project checklist have been fulfiled.
To make sure the requirements in the standard project checklist are met, the scholar should:

● Search Google to identify all synonyms for the disease, and add the synonyms to the home page. (Click here to learn how to add synonyms)

● Check the list of topics and make sure that no other microchaptered page with a synonym to my topic has already been created.

● Create redirects to the disease page the scholar is working on (including all the synonyms I identified). (Click here to learn how to make redirects)

● Remove all abbreviations of the disease name from the microchapters content, add them to the Synonyms and Keywords, and make sure they redirect to the disease page.

● Add authors to pages with content and keep all existing authors who previously contributed to the page as first associate editor-in-chief co-authors.

● Organize all existing content, one sentence at a time, into the correct microchapters.

● Add content that was missing from WikiDoc but present on WikiPatient.

● Make sure that external websites (from which the information is being copied) including pages on government websites are not protected by copyright, and make sure that the information you want is available for public distribution , copying, and dissemination.

● Add relevant content (if applicable) from:

a) MedlinePlus (Patient Pages)

b) National Cancer Institute cancer.gov

c) SEER seer.cancer.gov

d) Wikipedia.org

e) Libre Pathology librepathology.org

f) National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases niddk.nih.gov

● Search Youtube youtube.com for video(s) that may improve the reader’s understanding of the disease pathophysiology, and fully watch the video(s) before embedding it on WikiDoc to make sure it does not contain commercial or personal infromation. ● Create hyperlinks for medical terms that are not the page itself. (Click here to learn how create hyperlinks)

● Remove the category “needs content” or “needs overview” where needed.

● Remove “Please help WikiDoc by adding more content here. It’s easy! Click here to learn about editing.” from pages that have content.

● Add references section at the bottom of each page with the code “{{reflist|2}}“.

● Create an overview section and add overview content based on the provided templates. (Click here to learn how to add overview content)

● Make sure to include the various classification systems, severity, and staging of the disease whenever available.

● Make sure to use lists with bullet points instead of text when adding content to the microchapters.

● Make sure to remove periods/full stops from the list.

● Make sure to only use sentences from the list of template statements to add content. (Click here to learn how to add content using the list of template statements)

When uploading a picture:

● Make sure to change the filename so that it conveys the content of the picture. For example, an x-ray image of an enlarged heart should be named “Cardiomegaly x-ray.jpg“.

Search Question

Search question could be broad or narrow based on the specific topic that you want to contribute. Questions related to the microchapters that need general information, such as pathophysiology could be started with broad questions, such as what is the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus? And then be narrowed accordingly like, what is the role of beta cells dysfunction in pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes? Or even very narrow question like, what is the effect of the potassium pump block for insulin secretion in beta cells in type 2 diabetes?

How To Search Pubmed MeSH database

The pubmed MeSH database can be used to search for MeSH terms that include heading, sub-headings and publications.
MeSH is a vocabulary thesaurus used for indexing articles on pubmed.
To perform a search for your topic, select “MeSH’ from the scroll down menu on the top left hand corner on the pubmed home page.
After selecting MeSH from the scroll down menu, type in your search query in the search bar.
Choose the appropriate term from the drop down suggestions.
Click search.
This will take you to a hierarchy of headings and sub-headings associated with your search query or topic.
Select the appropriate headings/sub-headings by check marking them.
Click “Add to search builder” on the right side of the page.
Click “search with pubmed”.
This will enlist the relevant articles of your search.
Click the appropriate filters on the left hand side of the page, for example, human/animal species, timeline of articles etc.
The use of this “explosion menu” of pubmed MeSH database will enable you to make your search on pubmed refined, targeted and relevant.
